Exploring Suduroy
Blue sky this morning....
....such a glorious view while eating a delicious breakfast at our bnb...
Today we planned to travel from the top to the bottom of this lovely Suduroy Island (the most southern island of the Faroe Islands). This town in the photo is Porkeri...
One of the many tunnels on the island...
Sandvik....From a distance all the towns ( the locals call them villages) look the same but when you drive down and have a look they are all distinctly different.
Every little village has some sort of harbour and little boat houses....
On our way north to see a magnificent view of the coastline...there is a 109 metre sea stack called Asmundarstakkur ...
....amazing cliffs...the ocean looked so blue...
On our hike back to the car, two oyster catchers made such a racquet...
The land we hiked on was private farm land....lots of sheep ....most of the farmers allow the public to walk through their land.
Baby geese ....I had never seen baby geese before....not sure why but there are a lot of geese in the Faroes.
Hvalba was a busy coal mining town many years ago, only one mine remains open. The town is situated at the bottom of a deep inlet (fiord).
The beach is beautiful...we didn't have our bathers with us but I would have been tempted to dip my toes in the water. Instead I searched for sea glass and found heaps.
So pretty...
Back to Porkeri on the way south...we stopped for a snack by the creek...
And drove through the town we are staying in ...Vagur...
So tame they let me give them a scratch...
These next photos were all taken at a place called Eggjarnar...it is an area which is known for its scenic viewpoint to the sea-cliffs of the southern part of Suduroy.
You can just see a guy at the top...
There is an abundance of lichens in the Faroes...often they appear to be attractive...
At the southern tip of Suduroy (and the Faroe Islands), lies Akraberg. The 14-metre tall cylinder shaped lighthouse has withstood storms since 1909.
We stopped and chatted to these two chaps...one is the lighthouse keeper and the other his son. They answered quite a few of our questions about the Islands.
Driving to our next hike....Beinisvord...we were both astounded when we saw the above...
It was a great walk and then magnificent views..
Beinisvord is a 469 metres high sea cliff, the highest in Suduroy...a vertical cliff facing the sea and a green slope down towards the village of Sumba.
