Watched the sun rise while we drank our tea.....

The black hills behind us didn't look black anymore...amazing how the sunshine changed their colour.

On the road again, back to Broome...

The bridge over the Fitzroy River suffered extensive damage during the recent floods in the Kimberley. A temporary bridge has been built while they build a new permanent one. Pete and I were thankful for this temporary bridge, if it hadn't been built so quickly we wouldn't have been able to have this wonderful adventure.

Pulled up at Willard Bridge Roadhouse for petrol and a coffee. We have seen plenty of road trains with three carriages but never one with four, like this petrol tanker. I couldn't fit them all in one photo!

The Great Northern Highway was also damaged by the floods so there was a lot of roadwork being done....while we were stopped I jumped out and took some photos..

We arrived in Broome in the early afternoon...Pete had booked us into The Pearle of Broome...it was lovely...so clean , no red dust....and a wonderful bathroom.

...and a swimming pool. After putting our washing in the washing machine and then the drier, we went out to dinner.

Morning greeting from this blue-winged kookaburra...we packed up and headed for Mimbi Caves along the Great Northern Highway.

One of the many small creeks we drove through....

The dirt road to the Mimbi Caves campground...

More amazing hills...black as...

Campground view east...black hills west

We thought Mimbi Caves would be a convenient overnight stopover between The Bungle Bungles and Broome...the Cave Tour that we went on was a bonus..

A delightful young indigenous fellow was our very knowledgable guide...the tour was started with the Smoking ceremony.

Above the caves...

The Caves are part of the 350 million year old Devonian Reef. The local indigenous people inhabited this unique network of caves that have been carved out of this ancient fossilised reef system over millions of years.

There is no electric lighting in the cave, we all had a torch.

Spectacular and delicate limestone formations .....

....and crystal clear freshwater pools...

Tea and damper after the tour...our guide also played his guitar and sang us a couple of songs. It really was a wonderful experience.

....evening walk, beautiful sky

....dinner...we managed to cook some reasonable meals with our little two burner.

I woke early this morning and saw that it was going to be a gorgeous sunrise....so I went for a walk with my camera.

Lovely colours of all the different grasses...it is a really colourful campground.

So many birds....

Our toilet....the campsite is very basic...no electricity and no showers...but very quiet (except for the birds).

Pete and his morning cuppa...

The walks in the Bungle Bungle Range are divided into the Northern and Southern ends of the range. We returned to the South first where you find the famous beehive domes and Cathedral Gorge.

A walk amongst the domes...

Isn't it just the most incredible place ?!

We followed a meandering uneven, sandy creek bed amongst the towering beehive domes and honeycomb rocks to the iconic natural amphitheatre, Cathedral Gorge. Breathtaking !

See me?

Looking up...

After enjoying the southern end of the range we then set off to the northern region. We stopped at Kungkalanayi Lookout on the way where we had a 360 degree view including the western escarpment of the Bungle Bungle Range.

The northern end....quite different...

The start of the walk to the Echidna Chasm is along a dry creek bed lined with Livistona palms. Between 11am and 1pm depending on the time of year Echidna "glow" when the sun is overhead.

Part of the Escarpment Trail....beautiful woodlands and spinifex hummocks.

This evening Pete and I climbed up a hill very near our campground to watch the sun set.

The range with the sun shining on it...

The mountains really did glow....

Yet another stunning sunset...
