DAY 2

HOSOKUTE TO ENA

A Japanese breakfast this morning....loved it....

....in our room...

....this ryokan really was beautiful inside....

...and outside...

Back on the trail....we will be walking 21 kms to Ena today....after one hour walking we passed by the Benzaiten pond.

....beautiful rural areas....

I couldn't resist taking this photo...

....more forest....

Ancient stone pavements....

These huge leaves are everywhere...

We think they are from Japanese Magnolia trees...

...another small village...we have seen a few houses that have these hanging persimmons...

Okute

Every house is different...so interesting...

....serene Japanese gardens....

Back into more forest and we saw this wild animal, who was very timid...we had no idea what it was...

Google told us it is a Japanese Serow...(goat-antelope ) it is found in dense woodland in northern and central Honshu.

We  stopped for lunch at Kariyasu restaurant, which is located in a cottage in the forest...we had made a booking. It was a delicious lunch and good company ( a couple from Malaysia sat next to us). The dining room was delightful too.

It rained for a couple of hours after lunch but we didn't get too wet as the trees sheltered us a little....

The prettiest tree so far....

....some great views of the mountains before we arrived at Ena.

Our destination ...Ena ....

Our gorgeous room for the night at the Yuzuriha Onsen Hotel ....

Our view...

...in my Yukata before going to the Onsen....both Pete and I enjoyed the Onsen experience, the warm baths and spa were just what we needed after our long walk.

Then off to the dining room (in our Yukatas) for another wonderful Japanese meal.

The Yuzuriha Onsen Hotel...I found this photo on the internet...

Phones and cameras were not allowed in the Onsen so I found these photos on the internet...it was so fantastic...

Heavenly!

On our way to the train station to catch the first of three trains to Mitake, where we will begin our walk along the Nakasendo Trail....

...waiting at the station....the trains came every two minutes...astounding...

These are some photos that I took from the train of the suburbs on the outskirts of Nagoya .

Feeling very glad that I can comfortably reach a handle in these trains...loving this country.

On board the second train ... country trains aren't as packed as the city trains...obviously..

Our third ride had these cute curtains....

Reached our destination .....Mitake....

It was such a cute little train...

Mitake Train Station ....

Mitake...

Interesting house ....

Off we go on the Nakasendo Trail ....

....so much rice grown along the way...

.......walking through the forest...

.....many Shrines along the path...

These persimmon trees were everywhere....and so many pretty little streams running through the villages...

Amazing stone path....

The Nakasendo Trail characters...

I was captivated by the magnificent bamboo forests....

....our lunch spot...

....the stunning autumn colours are beginning to show...

Daikokuya Ryokan in Hosokute where we are staying tonight....

The owners greeted us with a cool drink, some Japanese tea and banana cake...

This is our sitting room and we have a separate bedroom ....and our own bathroom down the hall. Our luggage had been delivered.

Looks pretty cool in his Yukata....

This was the first of our seven courses for dinner....the owner explained what foods were in each course...we ate everything, it was delicious....
